When speaking, the conceptual content of the message to be expressed (i.e., the semantic context) constrains possible word candidates, thereby modulating the ease of lexical access and word production. I will present a number of studies examining electrophysiological effects underlying context-driven word production. In particular, I will discuss alpha-beta oscillations in relation to memory and motor aspects of word production and what this neuronal signature can reveal about neuroplasticity following left-hemisphere stroke. I will also show how hippocampal theta oscillations, measured intracranially, track the amount of semantic associations in sentence contexts and how the medial temporal lobe interacts with more classic language-related brain areas.
