How to find and use ebooks

All ebooks held by the library and all those ones which are available via MPS-wide publishers' packages are searchable in our OPAC, too - with the solely exception of the theses`s database ProQuest.
The MPG EBooks Catalogue combines all MPG-wide accessible ebooks and offers some sophisticated search and filter options for these packages.

Dawsonera is a portal which offers access to ebooks of a wide range of publishers in an integrated environment. The library acquires single ebooks which can be found in the OPAC, too. Dawsonera portal can be used, too, in order to search for all ebooks available by this provider. By way of the 5 minutes preview as well as by way of renting it is possible for you to explore ebooks which are not yet held by the library. You can also request us to buy an ebook. This portal`s ebooks can be read online and temporarily downloaded. They can be searched in full text, notes can be edited and - though restricted - content can be copied and printed.

PDF viewers

Please note: Dawsonera requires the most current Adobat Reader version (Windows, Linux and Mac).
Dawsonera does not work correctly when used with Adobe linux versions older than version 9 - in this case please contact the IT colleagues in order to get your Adobe updated. In case you experience that pages are opened in separate windows instead of within the web page , the Adobe Plugin to display PDF files within browser windoes is most probably missing. Please check, if the option Allow fast web view is active in "Edit/Preferences/Internet". In the browser (see Preferences or Options and then Applications ) the Content Type PDF file has to be mapped to the Action Use Adobe Reader (in Iceweasel) or Use Adobe Reader (in Mozilla) , respectively. If the Plugin is installed, per default both settings should be correct and look like in these images.

If the Plugin seems to be missing in your Linux oder Metaframe distribution, please contact the IT colleagues. Should you encounter problems with your private computer, please just update your Adobe, include all plugins and mind the configuration mentioned above.
In order to activate the highlighting option, 1. right-click on the PDF document, 2. select 'Page display properties', 3. navigate to the 'Search' section 4. 'Enable search highlights from external server'.
Please contact the IT staff in case you want you Adobe reader to be updated!

5 Minute Preview

The preview option allows to search inside a title which the MPI library has not (yet) purchased, for a period of 5 minutes per user. This is intended to be helpful to quickly check an item and to decide if it should be ordered by the library. Printing and copying content is not possible within the preview option.

Rental

Th rental option allows to rent a book - like interlibrary loan - which has not (yet) been purchased by the library. But, as renting costs the library, please keep in mind that it might be more senseful to purchase an item if you will need the book for a longer period of time or if you think it might be relevant to other persons, too. Renting is possible for one or to weeks. Rented ebooks can be downloaded, too.

Download

Documents are protected by Digital Rights Management, which restricts downloading to a period of maximally 7 days. After this the file is no longer accessible even when you have saved it to your own storage media.

Printing and Copying

Copy and print facilities are not available from the downloaded pdf! When reading online, due to Digital Rights Management, you can print and copy 5% of a book`s content per month. Please note : Printing must be triggered via the ebook's site menu, not the browser menu. The same applies for copying: Please enable it first via the site menu item "Copy". Printing and copying is possible while using books that are purchased and rented, but not while using books by way of the 5 Minute Preview .

Editing Notes

Making notes is not possible within the downloaded file, but while reading online. Notes will be persistent, e.g. a note that you have once edited will be readable by yourself (but noone else) during the book`s life-time.
