My interests are about the cross-cultural diversity in music and the methods we can apply to quantify its characteristics. I combine datasets of music around the world with large-scale behavioural experiments to tackle questions about inter-individual and cross-cultural differences in music cognition. I'm also a visiting researcher at the Computational Auditory Perception group in Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics and lead the project GlobalPOP where we investigate how popular music have evolved in different parts of the world since the 1950s. By gathering large datasets on auditory information retrieved from raw audio using machine learning (e.g., mood, chord progression, rhytm), lyrics, and other meta data, the GlobalPOP project aims to uncover how musical preferences and perceptions are shaped in a similar or dismilar way across different cultures.
