The emergence of a sense of agency – the experience that one can cause effects with their actions – is a crucial milestone in early cognitive development. It allows infants to learn about the causal structure of the world in ways that would not have been possible otherwise. Moreover, the emerging sense of agency is a major step in sociocognitive development by helping the infant to differentiate between self and other. In this talk, I will present our recent work on the sense of agency in early infancy, for which we have taken an innovative approach combining theoretical work, computer simulations and neuroscientific methods.
