While Merge is available to only us, languages still differ with respect to the systematic rules they use. In this talk, I discuss the acquisition of rules by children, and how a principled theory of learning simplifies the machinery of human language. Synthesizing research findings in the domain of numerical cognition, I will also present evidence that the form of linguistic rules and its acquisition create the foundation for conceptual knowledge and development.
