The problem in focus is how to identity the structure of our mental representations. I will begin by presenting three main alternatives that have been proposed within the cognitive sciences: symbolic systems, neural networks, and spatial (geometric) representations. The advantages and drawbacks of these approaches are compared. I present my theory of conceptual spaces as an example of a spatial representation system. Evidence from concept formation and language acquisition supports the spatial approach to representations. I will conclude by discussing some connections to cognitive neuroscience. Poster
