A substantial impediment to healthy living in older adults is the compromised functioning of the motor system, and the neuroplastic processes underlying the learning and consolidation of motor skills in particular. This presentation will highlight results from a series of experiments in which we employ interventions, particularly post-learning sleep and non-invasive brain stimulation, in an effort to enhance offline motor memory consolidation in an aging population. Modulations at the behavioral level will be related to intervention-dependent changes at the neural level, assessed via multimodal neuroimaging examining task-related brain activity, resting state functional connectivity and the concentration of specific neuro-metabolites (e.g., GABA). Results will be discussed in the context of the growing debate of whether sleep and non-invasive brain stimulation are viable and effective avenues to enhance motor learning and consolidation processes in both healthy and pathological populations.
