The amount of stimuli we can present in fMRI experiments is commonly assumed to be limited by the sluggish nature of the BOLD response and its non-linearities at very short inter-stimulus intervals (ISI). Contrary to this, we hypothesize that it is possible to significantly speed up the presentation rate of visual stimuli when using contrastive, condition-rich experimental designs. To test our hypothesis, we will follow an iterative process of collecting multi-session data from several subjects at multiple ISIs, evaluating the data using multivariate decoding and representational similarity analysis, and adjusting experimental and scanning parameters accordingly. Together, this project has the potential to drastically increase the speed at which fMRI data can be acquired when using condition-rich experimental designs.
