Listeners can easily say if a singer sounds “right” or if a music performance is “correct”. What is the basis of such judgments? This question can be addressed at different levels, from the molecular to the philosophical/psychological level. This talk is about the acoustical and cognitive levels. I will present a series of experiments in which we use psychophysics to: 1) examine what means “in/out-of-tune” or “on/off-beat” in different musical contexts and 2) observe how this information is processed (i.e., continuous or categorical perception phenomenon). Altogether, these experiments focus on higher order categories relative to “correctness” and more generally address the question of listeners’ appreciation of artistic performances.
