DESCRIPTION:A core technological challenge in neuroscience remains the inab
ility to access most of the brain\, most of the time\, across most of an a
nimal's lifespan. To overcome this limitation\, my lab develops self-drivi
ng tracking microscopes that enable brain-wide\, cellular-resolution calci
um imaging in freely moving larval zebrafish. Using this platform\, we hav
e uncovered the neural correlates of exploitation-exploration states durin
g foraging\, revealed novel sleep substates with distinct eye-movement kin
ematics\, and discovered place cells for the first time in a non-amniote a
nimal. The existence of place cell in the larval zebrafish brain suggests
that abstract spatial cognitive representations can be generated by a comp
act neural network of only 100\,000 neurons\, opening the door to brain-wi
de mechanistic analysis of the underlying circuitry. Building on these dis
coveries\, my lab is now focused on 1) uncovering the neural architectures
that underlie spatial cognition in the vertebrate brain through joint ana
lysis of brain-wide activity and brain-wide synaptic connectivity in the s
ame animal\, and 2) understanding the developmental processes that expand
spatial representational capacity over time. I will highlight engineering
efforts to create autonomous systems with embedded intelligence that enabl
e whole-brain recording across circadian and developmental timescales with
out human intervention\, making it possible to directly track the emergenc
e\, stabilization\, and reorganization of spatial cognitive networks withi
n a single animal over development.\nSpeaker: Dr Jennifer Li & Dr Drew Rob

DESCRIPTION:The attention mechanism\, central to the transformer architectu
re\, has emerged as a powerful and scalable computational motif underlying
many recent advances in machine learning. Beyond its success in AI\, atte
ntion offers a compelling framework for building interpretable\, mechanist
ically grounded models of brain function. In this talk\, I will present a
line of work exploring this potential across encoding and decoding. I will
begin with Transformer brain encoders\, in which attention is used to mod
el how retinotopic visual features are dynamically routed to category-sele
ctive areas in high-level visual cortex\, achieving state of the art encod
ing performance. I will then describe how this framework was extended to c
onstruct a digital twin of the visual system\, enabling in silico experime
nts that reveal categorical visual selectivity across the whole brain. A t
hird line of work leverages the in-context learning property of transforme
rs to build encoding models that generalize across subjects and datasets.
Finally\, I will present our work on interpretable decoding models that re
construct images from brain activity using attention-based architectures.\

DESCRIPTION:How the brain tells time is fundamental for the individuation\,
the coincidence\, the integration\, and the ordering of events in time\,
but also for the feeling that time passes\, that things exist for a while
(duration)\, or that we can\, at will\, mentally travel to our vanished pa
st and our not yet existing future. An epistemological difficulty stands i
n the way of understanding the status of 'time' in the neurosciences: temp
oralities emerge from the brain's perspective (the generator\, actuator\,
and observer)\, not from the external observer. Yet\, how neural circuits
code\, use\, and represent temporal information is largely debated. I will
discuss the role of neural rhythms from the basic feeling that time passe
s to the elicitation of\, and the mental navigation in\, temporal cognitiv
e maps.\nSpeaker: Prof. Virginie van Wassenhove

DESCRIPTION:Language is an unique communicative system involving hemispheri
c lateralization of the brain. Such a lateralization is visible at the str
uctural level\, even at birth\, in key cortical language areas\, such as t
he perisylvian Planum Temporale\, its main connecting fiber track with Bro
ca’s area - the arcuate fasciculus and the STS. To discuss the question o
f language origins\, the studies of the communicative gestural system of o
ur primate cousins\, including our own research in baboons\, have showed s
imilar key intentional and referential properties of language as well as s
ome similar underlying structural hemispheric specialization. In the prese
nt talk\, I will present our behavioral and in vivo MRI brain imaging stud

DESCRIPTION:Transcranial ultrasonic stimulation (TUS) is an emerging techni
que that comes with the promise of non-invasive deep brain neuromodulation
at unprecedented spatial precision\, which may revolutionize the treatmen
t of neurological and psychiatric disease. Two major challenges currently
constitute roadblocks for a wider adoption of the technique in basic resea
rch and clinical application. On the one hand\, the human skull bone cause
s significant reflection\, aberration\, and attenuation of the ultrasound
waves and thus unintended spatial shifts and intensity reductions of the s
timulation focus. Individual acoustic simulations are used to tackle this
issue but require high quality bone imaging data from CT or special MR-seq
uences as well as empirical validation. On the other hand\, the large para
meter space of possible stimulation parameters needs to be explored to est
ablish robust and effective neuromodulation protocols\, while considering
the known state-dependency of TUS neuromodulatory effects\, existing bioph
ysical safety limitations\, and peripheral co-stimulation confounds. Empir
ical proof of both target exposure and neuronal target engagement is thus
required to evaluate and correctly interpret TUS neuromodulatory effects.
While the former requires specialized imaging techniques such as MR-thermo
metry and MR-based acoustic radiation force imaging (MR-ARFI)\, the latter
can be achieved by combining TUS with established functional neuroimaging
\, electrophysiological\, or other brain stimulation techniques. In my tal
k I will provide an introduction into both the fundamentals and the practi
cal aspects of TUS application\, discuss the promises and pitfalls of a co
mbined application with EEG\, fMRI\, and TMS\, and provide examples from o
ngoing TUS research in our lab.\nSpeaker: Prof. Dr. Til Ole Bergmann

DESCRIPTION:Over the past two decades\, advances in high-resolution functio
nal MRI (fMRI) using ultra–high-field scanners have begun to transform ou
r understanding of the human brain. This approach has shifted the focus fr
om large-scale brain networks at the population level toward the mesoscale
neuronal mechanisms that underlie complex visual functions in individual
subjects. In this talk\, I will present our recent findings that leverage
high-resolution fMRI to elucidate the organization of cortical columns wit
hin the visual system in individuals with both neurotypical and amblyopic
visual development. Specifically\, I will show how this technique enables
us to: (a) directly visualize mesoscale neuronal ensembles such as ocular
dominance columns in the primary visual cortex and thin/thick-type columns
across extrastriate areas\; (b) characterize the functional connectivity
and spatial frequency preferences of these columnar systems\; and (c) asse
ss how developmental visual disorders\, such as amblyopia\, alter their fu
nctional organization. Together\, these results highlight the transformati
ve potential of next-generation neuroimaging to bridge the translational g
ap between invasive animal studies and noninvasive human neuroscience. Thi
s work provides novel insights into the neuronal mechanisms underlying per
ceptual impairments and extends our understanding of human visual processi
ng beyond what has been achievable through animal models alone. Acknowledg

DESCRIPTION:There have long been cases of bullying and abuse of power in Ge
rman academia\, particularly by professors with permanent positions – the
re are numerous statements from former and current researchers\, especiall
y early career researchers (ECRs). Abuse of power manifests itself in vari
ous ways\, including intimidation\, verbal attacks\, and even sexual assau
lt\, sometimes lasting for years. Women and international researchers are
particularly affected. Established scientists who abuse their power are of
ten beneficial to a university's reputation as long as their behavior rema
ins hidden\, which makes efforts to change the situation more difficult. A
lack of reporting structures makes complaints nearly impossible and preve
nts effective sanctions. The strictly hierarchical academic system in Germ
any—in which professors have almost absolute authority over ECRs on tempo
rary contracts—creates a culture that normalizes exploitation. Surveys sh
ow that almost a quarter of researchers have experienced abuse of power an
d almost 40% have witnessed it. Genuine reform requires a redistribution o
f power\, increased job security\, and transparent accountability to prote
ct the integrity of research and the well-being of young scientists. In my
talk\, I will first define the problem and clarify which structures at Ge
rman educational and research institutions promote abuse of power and who
benefits from it. I will then outline necessary steps that would make abus
e of power more difficult\, such as a strict separation of supervision and
evaluation of ECRs. Finally\, I will introduce the certificate course “R
ecognizing and Preventing Abuse of Power” that started at the University
of Würzburg in the 2025/26 winter semester.\nSpeaker: Prof. Dr. Andrea K

DESCRIPTION:To funders\, society\, and aspiring early career researchers\,
open science is a strict necessity in research conduct - and with good rea
son. But when you’re buried in the everyday workload in science\, inches
away from a last-minute deadline\, or within a rather traditional research
environment\, open science can feel like an additional burden stacked on
top of a large existing todo list. This talk focuses on open science from
the perspective of open source research software\, which at times may feel
particularly cumbersome: Why open tools rather than the integrated analys
is suite there is a license for anyway? Why script\, when there’s a point
and click interface? Why publish my code\, or even maintain it\, when oth
ers may use it to publish faster without any benefit to me? In this talk\,
I’ll argue for the concrete benefits of these decisions\, and explore ho
w open practices and their byproducts empower researchers to take control
over their outputs\, ensure sustainability\, and contribute to digital sov
ereignty – both for the individual scientist and science and society at l
 arge.\nSpeaker: Dr Adina S. Wagner

DESCRIPTION:In vivo MRI at mesoscopic resolution (0.1-0.5 mm) enables detai
led visualization of the brain’s angioarchitecture\, which can be examine
 d across multiple spatial scales\, including (1) leptomeningeal vessels\,
 (2) pial vessels\, and (3) intracortical vessels. Recently\, using multi-s
 hot\, multi-echo 3D EPI with T2* contrast\, we have achieved substantial a
dvances in imaging the venous angioarchitecture in living humans at 0.35 m
m isotropic resolution. Our optimized imaging protocol provides whole-brai
n coverage in under seven minutes\, making the mesoscopic angioarchitectur
e imaging both feasible and practicable for a wide range of neuroimaging s
tudies. Additionally\, we have developed novel processing and analysis met
hods to enhance visualization and quantification of vascular structures ac
ross spatial scales. The combination of our imaging and analysis advanceme
nts open new opportunities for studying cerebrovascular function in relati
on to cortical layers and columns\, as well as for anatomical investigatio
ns in developmental and clinical research.\nSpeaker: Ömer Faruk Gülban

DESCRIPTION:We assume that the external environment has a major impact on b
rain plasticity as well as on behavior. However\, the influence of the phy
sical environment is oftentimes neglected\, in particular in the human neu
rosciences. In order to fill this gap\, the discipline of Environmental Ne
uroscience has evolved\, that may help to clarify the mechanisms behind re
storative effects of nature and therewith provide answers to the question
whether the effects are accomplished via a cognitive or affective route. W
ithin the scope of this presentation\, research will be presented that att
empts to link features of the living environment to brain structure and fu
nction. Moreover\, several studies will be presented demonstrating that sh
ort- or long-term interactions with natural environments (such as a walk i
n a forest\, watching pictures of nature or exposure to virtual nature env
ironments) may improve cognition\, brain activity as well as mental health

DESCRIPTION:A key goal of cognitive neuroscience is to generate an understa
nding of the functional neuroanatomy of cortical systems. Using computatio
nal encoding models and the visual system as a model system\, I will descr
ibe recent empirical and computational innovations that have advanced unde
rstanding of key cognitive neuroscience questions: How do spatiotemporal c
omputations by population receptive fields contribute to spatial and tempo
ral integration across processing streams? What spatial/spatiotemporal com
putations explain elusive phenomena\, such as simultaneous suppression? Wh
at computational constraints may lead to the formation of maps in visual c
ortex? In the first part\, I will describe new empirical and computational
frameworks we have developed and validated – spatiotemporal receptive fi
elds (st-PRFs) that estimate from fMRI data the spatial and temporal summa
tion windows of each voxel in the visual system (units of visual degrees a
nd milliseconds). Then\, using st-pRFs\, we elucidate neural spatial and t
emporal windows across the entire visual system and assess how simple\, bo
ttom-up computations together with nonlinearities like transients\, contri
bute to simultaneous suppression. In the second part\, I will describe a n
ew kind of deep neural network that we have developed – topographic deep
neural network (TDANN). Different from a typical DNN\, TANN model units ar
e arranged retinotopically on a simulated cortical sheet and during self-s
upervised training the loss function encourages units on the simulated cor
tical sheet to have correlated responses. We find that this single unified
principle predicts the function and spatial topography of maps at differe
nt scales in the visual system– from orientation\, spatial frequency\, an
d color patches in V1\, to category-selective clusters in ventral temporal
cortex\, to the formation of three processing streams spanning the occipi
 tal\, temporal\, and parietal cortices.\nSpeaker: Prof. Kalanit Grill-Spec

DESCRIPTION:Magnetic susceptibility imaging has evolved significantly since
the introduction of susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI)\, which was ini
tially developed for clinical applications such as detecting microhemorrha
ges. In the mid-2000s\, advancements in high-resolution phase imaging led
to the development of quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM)\, a method
that allows for the quantitative assessment of magnetic susceptibility in
the brain. QSM has opened up new possibilities for neuroimaging\, particu
larly in the quantification of iron in deep brain structures\, a biomarker
associated with various neurological conditions. While QSM has provided v
aluable insights\, it has primarily been limited to measuring a combined s
ignal from different sources of magnetic susceptibility. In the brain\, ir
on and myelin are the two dominant contributors\, each with opposite magne
tic properties— iron being paramagnetic and myelin being diamagnetic. Thi
s limitation has motivated the need for more refined techniques to disenta
ngle these distinct sources of susceptibility. In this presentation\, I wi
ll introduce a technique developed in our lab called susceptibility source
separation. This method provides a breakthrough by allowing the separate
quantification of myelin and iron in the brain. Through susceptibility sou
rce separation\, we can now obtain high-resolution maps that independently
profile the distribution of myelin and iron. This is particularly valuabl
e for studying the brain\, where myelin and iron play crucial roles in bot
h healthy brain function and the progression of neurological diseases. I w
ill discuss the underlying physics that enables this separation\, includin
g the biophysical modeling and algorithm employed. The validation of the m
ethod has been demonstrated through various approaches including histology
\, showing its accuracy in separating the signals of myelin and iron. The
clinical potential of this technique is significant\, with early studies i
ndicating its applicability to diseases such as multiple sclerosis\, where
both iron deposition and myelin degradation are key pathological features
. In addition\, the method holds promise for more accurate mapping of cort
ical myelination\, which could improve our understanding of a variety of n
eurodegenerative diseases and brain aging.\nSpeaker: PhD Jongho Lee

DESCRIPTION:Interactions occurring within the space near the body are studi
ed in a wide range of disciplines\, from ethology to philosophy. Indeed\,
many behavioural responses are enhanced when stimuli occur near certain bo
dy parts. This makes evolutionary sense: a predator within striking distan
ce is more relevant than one farther away. Neuroscientific studies in prim
ates have suggested a physiological foundation for such behavioural modula
tions\, leading to the concept of peripersonal space (PPS). But what is pr
ecisely meant when referring to PPS? Predominant conceptual frameworks des
cribe PPS as a single\, distance-based\, in-or-out zone within which stimu
li elicit enhanced neural and behavioural responses. In this talk I will f
irst show that this intuitive framework is contradicted by neurophysiologi
cal and behavioural data. I will then argue that the so-called PPS measure
s do not represent stimulus proximity\, but rather the value of actions ai
ming to create or avoid contact between objects and the body – and that f
or this reason they should be referred to as bodypart-centred response fie
lds. This reconceptualisation of PPS as a set of graded egocentric fields
describing the value of contact actions takes into account mainstream theo
ries of action selection and behaviour. I will finally demonstrate\, using
reinforcement learning in artificial neural networks\, that bodypart-cent
red response fields arise naturally from two simple and plausible assumpti
ons about living agents: 1) they experience reward when they contact objec
ts in the environment\, and 2) they act to maximise reward. This perspecti
ve reproduces multiple foundational findings in the peripersonal space lit
erature (seamlessly reconciling a number of contradicting empirical observ
ations)\, provides testable predictions\, and subsumes existing formal mod
els of the so-called peripersonal space (PPS).\nSpeaker: Prof. Giandomenic

DESCRIPTION:Comprehensive description of brain tissue's microstructure is c
rucial for studying the normal and diseased brain. In the talk I will pres
ent an in-vivo biophysical framework for increasing the specificity of qua
ntitative MRI to distinct microstructural features of brain tissue\, such
as the lipid composition and the iron homeostasis. This non-invasive appro
ach identifies lipidomic-related changes in the aging human brain\, and al
lows to test different aging theories. This approach also reveals the disr
upted iron homeostasis in brain tumors\, and provides iron-related informa
tion inaccessible by conventional MRI approaches. Finally\, I will propose
a new MRI protocol\, for implementing this qMRI approach at the sub-voxel
level. By monitoring microstructural processes in living brains\, we hope
to gain a quantitative and specific description of brain tissue that unti
l now was possible only post-mortem\, and may further advance human brain
 research.\nSpeaker: Shir Filo

DESCRIPTION:Despite the vital role of scientific software\, it remains an o
verlooked part of research\, often developed within short funding periods
with little support for long-term maintenance. This results in software th
at is hard to discover and challenging to install. It also lacks interoper
ability across different computing systems\, hindering its reuse and viola
ting the FAIR principles - which advocate for scientific outputs to be Fin
 dable\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, and Reusable. In this talk\, I will p
resent our attempts at this problem through the Neurodesk.org project\, an
d I will show what we are planning next.\nSpeaker: Dr Steffen Bollmann

DESCRIPTION:Ultra-high field MRI at 7T holds great potential but also prese
nts significant challenges\, often necessitating extensive calibration tim
es to achieve spatially heterogeneous B1+/ΔB0 profiles. This talk explore
s the development of novel methodologies to address such challenges in car
diac and spinal cord imaging. It includes the creation of calibration-free
parallel transmission techniques to eliminate conventional time-consuming
calibration routines and covers broadband excitation to compensate for lo
cal ΔB0 variations or chemical shifts. Moreover\, the presentation delves
into respiration-related ΔB0 variations in mid- to lower spinal cord reg

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Multi-echo gradient-echo (GRE) sequences are commonly
used for anatomical imaging of the spinal cord because they provide excel
lent contrast between grey matter (GM)\, white matter (WM)\, and cerebrosp
inal fluid (CSF). One of their main limitations is the sensitivity to volu
ntary and involuntary motion\, leading to ghosting artifacts and lower ima
ge quality even in compliant subjects. Time-varying B0 fields related to t
he breathing cycle contribute substantially to the artifact load in the sp
inal cord. Navigator readouts can be used to measure the intensity of the
B0 fluctuations\, allowing to demodulate the acquired signal before the im
age reconstruction. However\, the standard navigator processing approach\,
developed for brain imaging\, often fails in the spine\, which can even e
xacerbate the artifacts. Therefore\, there is a need for navigator process
ing specifically tailored to spinal cord imaging. In this study\, we explo
re the effect of optimized processing pipelines for navigator-based correc
tion on the image quality of a multi-echo GRE sequence acquired in the spi
nal cord at 3T.\nSpeaker: Laura Beghini

DESCRIPTION:Scrutiny of the cortical neuronal circuits underlying human vis
ual perception typically involves the summarization of large-scale recordi
ngs of brain activity under different perceptual states\, with the combina
tion of various measurement modalities and modeling techniques being criti
cal in revealing organizing principles. In this seminar\, we'll delve into
the relationship between anatomical structure and evolving patterns of ne
uronal functional connectivity across the early visual foveal cluster (V1-
V2-V3). I will show how we can inform our understanding of visual percepti
on through different recording modalities\, combining high-resolution fMRI
and laminar electrophysiology with computational modeling. I will present
key findings on task-dependent modulation of directed interactions across
visual cortical areas in humans and laminar distinctions in visual proces
sing in Macaque\, as well as touch on preliminary validation work. Finally
\, I look forward to discussing new advancements and techniques and to pro
viding a clearer picture of neuronal circuit dynamics at the mesoscopic le
 vel.\nSpeaker: Dr Nicolás Gravel

DESCRIPTION:The brainstem is a crucial yet understudied structure of the hu
man brain. Due to the technical difficulties of imaging deep brain structu
res\, the cerebral cortex has long been the focus of in-vivo human imaging
studies. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in particular has d
eepened our understanding of the cortex\, including the presence of functi
onally specialized brain regions\, intrinsic functional networks\, and our
understanding of higher-order cognitive processes. The brainstem’s role
in what is now considered primarily cortical organization and function rem
ains an open question. Here we employ a recently acquired 7T fMRI brainste
m dataset\, which underwent rigorous physiological noise correction and wa
s delineated according to 58 brainstem nuclei\, to study how functional ac
tivity in the brainstem aligns with cortical function. We identify a set o
f brainstem hubs that are maximally connected to the cortex\, including th
e periaqueductal grey\, the dorsal raphe\, and the laterodorsal tegmental
nucleus. Likewise\, cortical regions that are maximally connected with the
brainstem appear in anterior regions. We demonstrate that these brainstem
and cortical hubs reflect both slow (fMRI) and fast (MEG) dynamics\, incl
uding lag-1 temporal autocorrelation\, signal variability\, and MEG alpha
power. Next\, we cluster brainstem regions with respect to how they connec
t to the cortex and identify modules of brainstem nuclei that subserve fam
iliar cortical functional activation patterns related to memory\, social c
ognition\, movement and sensation\, and emotion. Using PET-derived cortica
l profiles for 18 neurotransmitter receptors and transporters we show that
neuromodulatory systems are likely mediating the relationship between bra
instem and cortical functional activity. Finally\, we demonstrate that uni
modal and transmodal cortical regions have distinct patterns of connectivi
ty to the brainstem. Altogether\, this study extends our perspective of co
rtical function---including dynamics\, cognitive function\, and the functi
onal hierarchy---to the brainstem\, demonstrating the importance of brains
tem activity to cortical function.\nSpeaker: Justine Hansen

DESCRIPTION:Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technologies provide unique cap
abilities to probe the mysteries of biological systems\, and have enabled
novel insights into anatomy\, metabolism\, and physiology in both health a
nd disease. However\, while MRI is decades old\, is associated with multip
le Nobel prizes (in physics\, chemistry\, and medicine)\, and has already
revolutionized fields like medicine and neuroscience\, current MRI methods
are still very far from achieving the full potential of the MRI signal. I
n particular\, traditional methods are based on classical sampling theory\
 , and suffer from fundamental trade-offs between signal-to-noise ratio\, s
patial resolution\, and data acquisition speed. These issues are exacerbat
ed in high-dimensional applications\, due to the curse of dimensionality.
Our work addresses the limitations of traditional MR imaging using signal
processing approaches that are enabled by modern computational capabilitie
 s. These approaches are possible because of certain "blessings of dimensio
nality\," e.g.\, that high-dimensional data often possess unexpectedly sim
ple structure that can be exploited to alleviate classical barriers to fas
t high-resolution imaging. This seminar will describe approaches we have d
eveloped that use novel constrained imaging models to guide the design of
new MR data acquisition and image reconstruction methods\, and enable subs
tantial acceleration of both low-dimensional and high-dimensional MR imagi
 ng experiments.\nSpeaker: Justin Haldar

DESCRIPTION:MRI signal generation is substantially influenced by factors su
ch as water content\, iron\, myelin\, and several other contributors. Iron
levels can be directly assessed using mass spectrometry\, while the quant
itative impacts of myelin's structure and composition remain unknown to a
certain extent and are often inferred from theoretical simulations. Additi
onally\, MRI relaxation rates and susceptibility are sensitive to these ti
ssue constituents\, but their specificity is limited. In this context\, po
st-mortem investigations utilizing complementary methods such as TEM\, LA-
ICP-MS\, MALDI-MSI\, CARS\, and SAXS-TT provide unique insights for the va
lidation and understanding of quantitative MRI parameters. However\, in-si
tu post-mortem MRI has to accommodate for factors like variable temperatur
e\, deoxygenated blood\, and perfusion. Furthermore\, the process of forma
lin fixation introduces a significant confounder\, often obstructing direc
t conclusions. In this presentation\, I aim to summarize our work on trans
lating post-mortem MRI findings to in-vivo conditions\, outline the analyt
ical methods used to assess brain tissue structure and composition\, and d

DESCRIPTION:Magnetic resonance imaging of the human spinal cord at 7 Tesla
offers new opportunities to visualize structures with high spatial resolut
ion and enhanced conspicuity\, and to detect functional networks with grea
ter sensitivity. Sub-millimeter in-plane fMRI acquisitions are desirable a
nd achievable\, but published studies have had modest temporal resolution
 (&gt\;2 sec). Using a custom-built 7T pTx spine coil\, we demonstrate sub-
second and sub-millimeter cervical cord fMRI for the first time. Employing
a 3D multi-shot sequence with appropriate phase corrections and NORDIC de
noising\, our data demonstrate temporal signal-to-noise ratios comparable
to those of supra-second protocols\, and we replicate bilateral functional
connectivity patterns previously published in the cord. Realizing sub-sec
ond and sub-millimeter spinal cord fMRI opens new avenues of discovery tha
t echo what has been reported through high spatiotemporal resolution brain
  fMRI.\nSpeaker: PhD Robert Barry

DESCRIPTION:Several Parallel Transmit (pTX)\, capable coils have become ava
ilable at 7T in the last few years. With pTx comes the ability to shape th
e excitation field to our needs. However\, while pTx applications have see
n great uptake in brain and body imaging\, their use for the spinal cord h
as been limited so far. In this talk\, we will demonstrate the feasibility
of designing and deploying Universal Pulses for the cervical spinal cord
at 7T. We will also show the first results in subject-specific B1+ shimmin
g for the c-spine\, using a dedicated Shimming Toolbox developed in our la
 b. Both approaches allow us to improve the signal homogeneity and thus del
iver better image contrast for high-field spinal cord imaging. Finally\, w
e will demonstrate the utility of the Shimming Toolbox for dynamic B0 fiel

DESCRIPTION:Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in nature and since a long time
also in technology. Yet\, there are many open questions\, needs for resear
ch and emerging new applications. Standards need to be set or refined\, an
d more accurate calibrations are required by industrial adopters of new te
chnologies. A particular challenge and opportunity arise at the lowest end
of the spectrum of magnetic fields. With demonstrated measurement sensiti
vities beyond the femtotesla (per root Hertz) scale\, the neuronal activit
ies of the brain following a peripheral nerve stimulus become detectable i
n a single trial\, for example. While even the foundations of physics can
be tested at the frontier of lowest metrological noise floors\, a current
trend is to make magnetic field measurement and imaging viable in applicat
ion contexts beyond quantum physics laboratories. Here\, we will discuss s
uch developments in terms of sensor developments\, measurement environment
s and key use cases. We will focus on atomic gas-based probes of stationar
y and slowly varying magnetic fields. With trapped ultracold gases\, high
resolution field mapping can be achieved with relevance to material develo
pments such as indium tin oxide replacements for next-generation touch scr
eens and solar panels. On the other hand\, cells containing thermal atomic
vapours can provide highest field sensitivities as part of optically pump
ed magnetometers with use in clinical neurology or current-density imaging
in electric vehicle batteries.\nSpeaker: Prof. Peter Krüger

DESCRIPTION:Compulsive behavior is a common feature of both OCD and patholo
gical gambling\, despite their differing motivational contexts. This talk
will explore the role of control and agency in the onset and perpetuation
of compulsions in these two conditions. Specifically\, I will examine how
a single belief disturbance\, such as a lack of trust in one's avoidance a
ctions or an illusion of control\, can trigger and maintain compulsions. U
sing computational models of cognition in conjunction with empirical data\
, I will demonstrate the direct link between this disturbance and the seve
rity of compulsions. Overall\, this talk will shed light on the importance
of control and agency in understanding and treating compulsive behaviors
across different contexts.\nSpeaker: Prof. Frederike Petzschner

DESCRIPTION:Researchers in psychiatry and neuroscience are increasingly rec
ognizing the importance of gut-brain communication in mental health. Based
on a foundation of animal studies demonstrating the vital role for microb
iota-brain communication in brain development\, behavior\, and brain funct
ion over the life span\, clinical studies have started to consider the mic
robiome in psychiatric disorders. Work to date by our group and others sug
gest that microbiota-immune-brain signaling is an important pathway that i
nfuences brain structure\, gene expression of stress-related and plasticit
y-related genes\, stress-reactivity\, and behaviour. Ongoing work in our l
ab is interested in determining the importance of peripheral T cells in th
e maturation of the microbiome\, microbe and host metabolism\, and neurode
velopment. The composition\, diversity and function of commensal microbes
is influenced by genetic\, lifestyle\, and environmental factors. Our incr
easing knowledge on pathways and involved mediators along the gut-brain ax
is has revolutionized our understanding of brain-body interaction. Intesti
nal bacteria act along the gut-brain axis in part by modifying the immune
response. On the other side\, bacteria produce neuroactive mediators and c
an modulate neuronal function\, plasticity and behavior. Our recent resear
ch has focused on the bidirectional communication between microbiota and T
cells in mouse models and in clinical popupations. This presentation will
highlight this work in the context of recent developments linking microbi
ota to behaviour and brain function. Understanding the influence of microb
iota-brain axis on brain function and behaviour is essential to understand
ing how host-microbe interactions are essential regulators of both physica
l and mental health. Understanding the basis of these differences\, their
functional impact\, and mapping them to clinical symptoms\, severity\, and
host biology is the next step in this fast-moving area of research. Moveo
ver\, the opportunity to harness our knowledge of the microbiome to develo
p novel therapies and to improve outcomes in psychiatry will be discussed.

DESCRIPTION:Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (MRF) was introduced in 2013
as an approach for mapping multiple tissue properties simultaneously using
MRI. This presentation will provide an overview of the MRF technique\, wi
th an emphasis on practical aspects of implementation\, and describe how t
issue property maps derived from MRF may be leveraged to provide additiona
l information about structure and function in the brain and beyond.\nSpeak

DESCRIPTION:Principles of neuroscience\, notably as they relate to vision\,
invoke concepts of building blocks\, opponency\, representation\, and age
ncy (active vision). He will argue that these ideas have been productively
developed using color as a model system\, with roots in the earliest west
ern theories of psychology dating to the ancient Greeks. In his talk\, he
will describe data from neurophysiology\, functional brain imaging (fMRI a
nd MEG)\, and psychophysics that aim to test the principles of neuroscienc
e and to place them in a holistic framework of our broad goal to understan
d brain and behavior\nSpeaker: Dr. Bevil Conway
