Background

By around 2 years of age, toddlers become more self-aware. They begin to develop an idea of what belongs to them and to others, and use the words "I" or "mine" more often.

This study investigates whether this developing self-awareness influences how toddlers aged 1 year and 4 months to 3 years and 6 months perceive new toys in a social context. Your child will be shown videos of new toys that are either given to them or to someone else, and where your child is looking on the screen will be recorded.

Study procedure

Since we need your help to guide your child through the experiment, we will give you a little guide before the experiment begins. After the playful tasks with your child are over, we will ask you a few questions about your child's development.

Technical requirements

Before starting the study, please ensure that:

• Your computer is plugged in

• Your webcam and speaker are functioning properly

• You are in a quiet room with as little distraction as possible

• You have a stable internet connection. Depending on your connection speed, you might have to wait a few minutes until the study is downloaded.

• For technical reasons, our experiment can currently only be carried out with the browser Chrome.

• We recommend using a mouse if you already have it in your home.
