The road to a doctorate is not an easy one. Anecdotal evidence as well as

recent studies have revealed that many PhD students are suffering from

serious mental health problems. For universities to take measures to

prevent or decrease young researchers’ mental health problems we need to

know more about this ‘mental health crisis’. Therefore. our work focuses on

(1) the prevalence of mental health problems; (2) how mental health

problems are related to PhD students’ background characteristics; and (3)

how mental health influences PhD students’ progress. intention to quit. and

satisfaction. More than 1.000 PhD students in the Netherlands completed our

survey on general mental health. aspects of burnout and work engagement.

and work-life balance and work-life conflict. In this talk. I will present

the results of this survey. and I will discuss what universities and

research institutes could do to prevent and address these problems.
