Computational modeling of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)

A general problem of the application of tDCS is the high inter-subject variability of the effect-strength. The principal reason for these differences are individual anatomical differences among subjects which alters the distribution of the electrical field within the subject’s head induced by the electrodes during tDCS. To predict this current distribution recent research tries to model and numerically solve the underlying electrostatic problem of tDCS by the means of a computer simulation. In my research, I am working on establishing and validating a pipeline for simulating tDCS based on individual MRI data and improving the detail of the modeling especially for the application of tDCS in stroke patients by incorporating information about altered or pathologic tissue such as white matter lesions or stroke affected areas in the brain.
