The early history of fMRI mostly focused on improving spatial resolution, but more recent effort shifted to increasing the temporal sampling rate of the BOLD signal. These fast fMRI data highlight some limitations of fitting simple hemodynamic response models and pave the way for new analysis methods. I will present our choice of acquiring fast fMRI data, called the HiHi method, as well as our attempt, called SAD, at identifying BOLD activations without assuming a specific hemodynamic model.
