The cerebellum contains about four times as many neurons as the cerebrum. It exhibits a highly detailed cytoarchitecture and macro-anatomy with its foliated cortex and the ribbon-like dentate nucleus. Evolutionary, the cerebellum has shown a multiple increase in size compared to the cerebrum. Functionally, the cerebellum is attracting increasing attention for its wide range of cognitive functions beyond motor control. The talk will provide an overview and outlook on studying the role of the cerebellum in cognition and ultra-high field MRI for detailed anatomical imaging.
