It is something of a paradox that our sense of smell was revered so strongly by people such as Nietzsche, Proust and Orwell and yet for many years, has been considered as something rather embarrassing and unworthy of our attention. Due to advances in science, the past 15 years has seen an explosion of interest in human olfaction. This talk will chart the current state of knowledge and examine the links between the chemical senses (smell/taste) and their role in eating behaviour and obesity.
