A recent analysis of publicly released data accompanying published papers in Cognition showed that not all published numbers could be reproduced, even though the data and code were available (https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10.1098/rsos.180448). The authors state that: "...suboptimal data curation, unclear analysis specification and reporting errors can impede analytic reproducibility, undermining the utility of data sharing and the credibility of scientific findings." In this workshop, I will suggest one way to minimize the chances of producing irreproducible results, focusing on repeated measures 2x2 factorial designs as a case study. [mehr]

In this presentation Dr Mumford will be discussing power in neuroimaging studies. More and more research is highlighting the fact that fMRI studies, especially those with hypotheses about individual differences, require large sample sizes to adequately power. What is the way forward? This talk will discuss how to run a proper power analysis and optimize efficiency for fMRI studies. Organized by the Open Science Initiative at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, this is a space to discuss various aspects related to open and reproducible research practices, from general issues to specific applications, presenting both enthusiastic and critical perspectives. Scientific reform in the last decade has led to a wide range of proposed changes in how we design, analyse, report, and publish scientific findings. As the implementation of better research practices spreads through the scientific community, there is a risk of merely changing old flawed heuristics with new flawed heuristics. In this talk, I will give examples of new research practices that were intended to improve our science, but that are already used rather mindlessly, without improving anything. I’ll also offer some reflections on what will be needed to overcome scientists' strong reliance on norms en heuristics, and actually improve the way we do science in practice. [mehr]
